• 4.0 out of 5 stars from bacon -- A very accessible book that asks about what we value and don't : There are a lot of books that cover similar topics ad naseum, so it is pleasant to find one that brings some different perspective and ideas to the table. The author did quite a bit of homework, arguably reading all of the modern/general interest works on meritocracy, care, end-of-days, and other topics, not to mention no shortage of direct interviewing. In a somewhat long-winded read, many pages of facts and statistics can be easily glossed over if you are remotely familiar with current trends. The author ultimately makes an appeal to rethink what is valued -- intelligence does not have to be the end all, be all, even if we should probably value that in our scientists and engineers. Makes entreaties for diversity of opinions in government, awareness that not everyone values "career," and that, perhaps, there's more than one way to skin the proverbial cat of living in a World where technocrats and their associated values have won, resulting in populist pushbacks on both sides of the Atlantic. Democracy requires understanding and agreeing to disagree, which is often lacking amongst the consensus of so called "anywheres." A worthwhile read for the breadth of research done and topics covered/woven together ( Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2020 )
